Drum Circle Facilitator

I am a professional rhythmic event and drum circle facilitator. I love to make music using any type of percussive instrument. I strive to sharpen my skills as a facilitator by continuing my education and attending professional workshops. I participate in the Drum Circle Facilitator Guild (DCFG) which is an organization of and for professional, trained facilitators of rhythm based events. It is my mission, and I truly enjoy, turning people onto rhythm and the incredible effects it can have on us humans.

I have facilitated events for kids, young adults, adults, elderly, folks in recovery and special needs groups. I run several drum circles around the Daytona, Florida area and sometimes you will find me surrounded by drums in a park inviting passersby to join me for adlib music making. The largest event that I have facilitated was for 120 seniors at a local community center. Everyone was engaged and smiling except for one man who was upset when it ended.

Not being a trained musician may have held me back from creating music for a few decades, but that was all over once I felt the vibration of the drum! The first time I touched a hand drum, I was hooked! As a matter of fact it changed my brain and my outlook on life. I was so excited, I started taking hand drumming lessons, attending facilitation trainings, practicing, and participating in professional drum facilitation retreats so that I could turn folks onto rhythm. I also went out and bought twenty drums much to my partner’s chagrin… and the game was on!

“Hand drumming brought back to me the kind of creativity I hadn’t experienced in years, and I wanted to share that with as many people as possible!”

-Michael Dermody

Having worked in corporate America for over 30 years, my brain went rather dormant and the brain drain had taken its toll, until I found rhythm! Hand drumming brought back to me the kind of creativity I hadn’t experienced in years, and I wanted to share that with as many people as possible!

I love to create a safe space for people so they feel empowered to play without judgement, to be able to be present, experiment and actually feel the rhythm.

"The most important things to remember when you come to a Derm event are to have fun, laugh, smile, and enjoy some stress relief! It's a great chance to meet people and become part of a rhythmic sensation!"

I have now been facilitating drum circles and rhythmic events for years and still my most favorite thing is when a person new to rhythm stops up after the event with a smile and says thanks!

And YES, we ALL have rhythm!
